They sat facing the waterfall with a view of the golf course to their right and also beyond the waterfall. It existed beyond a wrought iron fence. Little hooded path lights dotted the golf cart path on the far side of the course near where neighboring houses sat. They provided the softest of illumination to the night at ground level while the moon hung steady, casting a silver wash over the entire yard.
“This is so nice.” Cressa found it otherworldly calm compared to her life spent downtown. “It reminds me of home—before it got complicated.”
“I sit out here most nights,” Esther said, swirling her drink, the ice clicking gently in her glass. “Often with one of these.”
Cressa copied her, lifting her own cup and taking a curious sip. She’d expected fire—but what she got was velvet. Cold peanut butter with a smooth, warm trail that wrapped her throat like a blanket.
“Wow. That might be the best thing I’ve ever tasted. Definitely the best alcohol.”
“This is my contribution to every hangout,” Jenna said, swirling her own glass. Her ice clacked wildly—her pour clearly had less restraint. “I found it during a whiskey tasting at BevMo. The girl I brought didn’t stick, but the whiskey did.”
“To whiskey, and friendship, and fuck those who break our hearts!” Esther toasted, raising her glass.
“Here here!” Jenna called.
“Fuck yes!” Cressa echoed, and they all took a long pull.
The Architecture of Reclaiming Oneself
In Renaissance of Self: Part 1 – The Escape, recovery isn’t found in a grand, dramatic gesture. It is found in the safe spaces built by found family—like a backyard pool in the dead of night, sharing a bottle of peanut butter whiskey with women who understand what it means to survive. Cressa’s journey through the rigid, toxic world of the Historical Sewing Society pageants is balanced by these deeply human moments of sanctuary.
Every corner of Terra has a story of survival. The intricate costumes, the history, and the deep lore all serve a single purpose: grounding a narrative about what happens after you choose to break free.
